The mission of DevelUp is to help you succeed in business; to turn your life around and to create a better future for yourself, your family and your community. We aim to create vibrant new enterprises and opportunities for young and old in Tower Hamlets, by building your confidence, developing your leadership skills, and by providing advice to you on launching your business.

“No emotional talk here, but I want to get up and do something,” one 24-year-old student living in Tower Hamlets said.

The program that we have developed is designed to help you optimise your life, career or business, by helping you think and act in the same way that all the great leaders and great organisations in the world think and act, which is the complete opposite to everyone else.

At DevelUp, we will support you to launch and build your own business, or help you gain meaningful employment. You can follow the program to establish business success, creditworthiness and financial self-sufficiency – even if you possess no collateral, or have a low credit rating. From building your confidence, through leadership and building relationships strategically, and on to teaching you how to build and run a profitable business; we also help people actually start a business, and for that business to become profitable.

Inspired by micro-finance and micro-credit, with the belief that charity is not an answer to poverty, and that charity is often essential as a short term solution, but in the longer term, creates dependency and takes away the individuals initiative to break through the cycle of poverty. Whereas loans offer people the opportunity to take initiatives in their life and in business, providing earnings and enabling them to payoff the debt. DevelUp lends its training to help people become credit worthy, and financially stable and responsible.

It will cost you nothing to attend the program. There are organisations in this sector that provide training for people who are unemployed, or stuck in a rut for any number of reasons. But not only do we coach people – we also provide the self-sustaining environment in which to be successful. Indeed, the final project in the program is to actually raise the finances for the next person along (someone has already raised the capital for you to attend the program), so that they can attend the program following in your footsteps, and by doing this you will learn how to raise capital for yourself time and time again. This is what we mean by lending you the program, and by the environment being self-sustaining.

You may also be given the opportunity to teach the program yourself, and so doing create an income for yourself, whilst at the same time helping others.

Redefining success

You may win the lottery; but the kind of change that this will have will only affect you on a superficial level. You would simply continue to act out the same conditioned patterns in more luxurious surroundings. The old patterns of thought, emotion, behaviour, reaction, and desire will still be acted out in endless repeat performances. They are programs that are written on the walls of the deepest memory caves of your mind. They give you an identity of who you perceive yourself to be – but they are not you – your past is not who you are. What you recall from your past are only memory traces left behind – your future is an illusion of what may or may not happen. You are the conscious entity that has free will – the one who can take responsibility to decide what you want to do now. And you can only do this in the present.

What does it mean to be a successful individual?

Is your happiness and prosperity always just around the corner?

Do you always think that next year will be better?

Things will improve if only x, y and z happens?

Are you always focused on becoming, achieving, and attaining?

Do you believe that if you acquire more things you will become happier, good enough, or better off?

Are you always trying to get somewhere other than where you are?

Is most of what you are doing just a means to an end?

When your goal is an ideal, a point in time in the future; when happiness or whatever you dream of will be obtained in whatever form; when you create your future in your mind to escape from the unsatisfactory present, you are missing out on a crucial element required to obtain success. Usually, the future is a replica of the past. Of course change happens to us and around us, but it’s usually only superficial. We may change jobs, buy a new house etc… But real transformation is rare and depends upon whether you can focus on the present, without dragging your past into the mix or dreaming of a better future without actually doing something about it now. Doing the stuff that you need to do for your future now, and enjoying what you are doing now IS your success. The end as a goal is a transitory end – it flies past in a nanosecond.

What is the difference between “success” and “achievement”?

Achievements are something tangible, a goal – hitting the numbers, getting the car/woman/man. They are great, but temporary. Success is a state of being. You feel successful. You are doing what you love doing.

Redefining our success paradigm:Success is …
knowing your purpose in life,
growing to reach your maximum potential, and
sowing seeds that benefit others.
You will never exhaust your capacity to grow toward your potential or run out of opportunities to help others.
You can see, by this definition, why success is a journey, rather than a destination. No matter how long you live, or what you decide to do in life, you will never exhaust your capacity to grow toward your potential, or run out of opportunities to help others.

Another benefit of focusing on the journey of success now, instead of on arriving at a destination or achieving a goal is that you have the potential to become a success today. The very moment that you make the shift to finding your purpose, growing to your potential, and helping others, successful is something you are right now, not something you vaguely hope one day to be.
